Fractional Odds, Decimal Odds and Implied Chance
The problem that most people have when they place a bet is that they bet with the sole purpose of winning. All they do is put ten points on something because they think it will win. There is no concept of value in doing that. But by understanding the betting odds, you will understand the value and as a result, you will be able to place more reasonable bets. So let’s actually get into how the betting odds are built.
Fractional Ratings
Let’s suppose that you are looking at a money gambling market and you see the betting odds quoted at about 9/4. Let’s take this bet at 9/4, what does 9/4 mean?
When you are looking at fractional betting odds, you are looking at a ratio so if you put £4, you will earn £9 in return. This is the easiest way to understand fractional betting odds. £4 less and you get back £9. Of course, with your £10 note, it makes no sense because you’re going to put a £10 note aside so how much are you actually going to get in return? What profit will you make? In fact, what you see with fractional odds is a ratio, so if I do 9 divided by 4, it’s a ratio of 2.25 times your bet that you will get in return. So, if you deposit £100, you will get back 2.25 times what you originally put in play. What you see when you look at fractional odds of bets is basically a ratio. All betting odds are ratios based on the amount that the bookmaker is willing to pay you, based on the bet you gave him.

Decimal Odds
When you look at a betting exchange, they tend not to use fractional betting odds. However, if you move your computer mouse over the betting odds, it will very often give you a comparison of fractional betting odds so that you can actually make a direct comparison between fractional and decimal. But let’s convert a fraction into a decimal anyway and then, convert that into an implicit chance. That’s the most important part of what we are going to do.
If we look at the fractional ratings of 9/4, I’m going to do nine divided by four, which is equivalent to 2.25. To convert it to decimal, just add one, it’s as simple as that. So if you look at betting the odds of 9/4 and the ratio is 2.25, it means that the decimal chance of betting will be 3.25. If you go to the exchange you’re going to use and you see a fractional score of 3.25, you can convert that to a ratio of 3.25-1 or 2.25. You will see that it is a 9/4 rating.
How can we find value in a football game?
So the big question is whether the price of a football team was set at 3.25 of its value or not? How do we know that’s the case? Should we make a bet?
If I do 1 divided by 3.25 that gives us 0.3077. What is that number? That number is actually a percentage. To facilitate understanding, 3.25 in decimal odds represents a 30.77% probability that this event will occur. To get that percentage, I made a division of the decimal betting odds and when you do that, you get a percentage that allows you to judge whether you have a good bet or not. So, if we place a backing bet at an odd of 3.25, we are saying that we think that what we are backing has a 30.77% chance of winning. If this game was to be played ten times, the team we want to back would win about three times in ten matches.
For example, if you know that Manchester United is playing against Team X and if they played them 10 times, they would win four of those ten matches and that’s where your 40% comes from. If you can find out why that’s going to happen, given all the circumstances. If you think that if they played that game ten times, they would win four out of ten of those games, then that’s how you get that 40% figure.
